Weight loss lowers inflammation, improves insulin sensitivity and reduces strain on the pancreas across the board.

But newer research suggests the type of fat lost matters just as much as the amount. A study following people years after a lifestyle intervention found that visceral fat loss left a lasting “metabolic legacy,” lowering long-term diabetes risk even after some body weight came back. Fat lost from the liver, pancreas or under the skin didn’t carry the same lasting protection. That finding challenges the idea that any weight loss delivers equal benefit.
